Unmanned journey of the train
- The diesel locomotive-hauled freight train, comprising 53 wagons, embarked on an unexpected journey from Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, to a village in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab.
- The incident unfolded between 7.25 am and 9 am, posing a potential threat that was fortunately averted without casualties or property damage.
How it happened
- After making a scheduled stop at the Kathua railway station in Jammu for a driver change, the freight train initiated an unintended journey, rolling down a slope gradient track on the Jammu-Jalandhar section, as indicated by preliminary information from a spokesperson of the Northern Railway reports PTI.
- During this critical phase of the movement, both drivers of the train, including the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot, were absent from the freight train, according to officials.
- In response to the incident, railway officials and staffers were placed on high alert along the entire route.
Emergency stop
- Gaining momentum along the route and covering a distance of over 70 kilometers, traversing approximately five stations at a speed of 100 km per hour, the unmanned train was brought to a halt on a steep gradient near Unchi Bassi railway station in Punjab with the crucial assistance of sandbags.
Railway inquiry
- Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu, Prateek Srivastava, stated that a thorough inquiry had been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident.
